A superb English translation by JW Thomas of two pre courtly german epics contained in the Heldenbuch both of which act as a kind of preuel to the legendary and so called historic Dietrich epics Ortnit tells the story of Ortnit and his dwarf father Alberich and his wooing of a Valkyrie bride and death at the hands of a three headed dragon It is said by scholars to be a corruption of the mythical Hartung legends known in Norse tradition as the Haddingjar Wolfdietrich is thought to contain the legendary tale of the Merovingian princes Theodoric and Theodebert the grandsons of Clovis but in this legendary version both are know by the names of Hugdietrich and Wolfdietrich The romance tells of their adventures with dwarves dragons bride winning adventures and the uest to regain their kingdom For anyone who's read the popular Nibelungenlied or Kudrunlied and is craving for of the same this is an ideal read The book is also important for readers of the Old English poems Deor and Widsith because if Malone's theories are correct on the Deodric that is mentioned in those poems it is Theodoric the Frank and not Theodoric the Ostogoth that the Old English poets mention in Deor and Widsith

There is some really great Germanic medieval epic literature out there that goes unnoticed Sure many know of such works as The Song of the Nibelungs but these two short epics deserve a wider audience I first came across these stories in Guerber's Myths and Legends of the Middle Ages and fell in love with them right away That was many years ago This wonderful translation gives us the full account of two heroes from Germanic hero cycles Ortnit is the shorter of the two A great king of Lombardy wants a wife And none would do but the daughter of a far off king that will not part with her because he wants her for himself EeeewwwwwNot daunted and with the help of a magical dwarf that also happens to be his father Ortnit shows up with thousands of knights and a war breaks out Many many men die much to the consternation of the love struck hero The slaughter is tragic and amusing at the same time and it is all because the hero did not want to marry someone closer to homeWhereas Ortnit reminded me of the classic epic Wolfdietrich had of that enchanted romance feeling Wolfdietrich goes on many adventures after he is ousted from his rightful kingdom by his douchebag brothers He establishes himself as a slayer of giants and dragons and wins for himself a new kingdom and wife before seeking vengeance on his brothersI could not put this book down even though my eyes were tired my book light's batteries were dying and the fact that it was 200AM in the morning and I had to go to work the next dayThis book did not have a downloadable version on Kindle and I don't know how available it is my copy seemed to be a used copy from a library I'm not sure it is even in print Maybe there is an online version because if you love Medieval stories such as Beowulf you must read these They may not be as perfect as the common epics and romances out there and I had a few problems with them here and there but what I did like outweighed everything else
