An interesting account of something I am tangentially interested in—peasants Jones’ main point basically that peasants were misunderstood before and after the revolution is one that I can agree with and I also liked how he drew out conclusions about peasant motivations as well Personally I don’t think most peasants had the time to really wonder about the intellectual components of what was going on or as he points out astutely the linguistic or literate capacity unless it affected either taxation or the commons both things that the revolutionaries couldn’t figure out Here’s the problem the French Revolution drew inspiration from the American one but the situations each country were in just prior to their revolutions occurring were diametrically different France Old World America New World The old had so much baggage and history to offload as well as very little patience trying to emulate what the new was able to do relatively easily because its old parent didn’t really care much about the new until it started getting uppity and not wanting to pay its fair share While one can make the point that the colonies were all uniue and different and blah blah blah France had actual legitimate differences As mentioned above not all peasants spoke French they spoke local dialects a patois or entirely non French languages like Catalan for instance Further while they all shared a king they did not share the same laws or legal systems southern France still operated under Roman law Northern France had a hodge podge of FrenchEnglish common law and all the provinces had different taxation rates So into this situation the French revolutionaries come blundering in blustering about how easy it is to get rid of feudalism and serfs two things America also never had and codify all the laws of France from the past 1800 odd years into one document and then BOOM find out it isn’t that easy after all Or fast Or painlessly Or cleanly I could go on at length here but basically France’s revolution wasn’t ever going to turn out like America’s because of all the stuff I just said and so so much and they sure as hell weren’t likely to solve any problems by turning on each other and declaring war against every major power in Europe either but hey That was 200 years ago now and it’s all turned out great The world is free of peasants Hahahahaha
