The Year of the Rooster referred to the Oriental zodiac It is the sign of dawn and awakening triumph and success and can only be achieved at the price of hard work and patience It also referred to a trinket a charm that was given to Peter Eliot for good luck The longtime bachelor was a business owner in Japan former US military soldier and recently recruited spy A former acuaintance had arrived unexpectedly at his door and then was murderedI acuired this book several years ago and I always seemed to place it at the bottom of my book stash I thought some day when I want to read a different style of RS I will attempt it Let me begin with the good I enjoyed the settings It started out in Japan then everyone I will get to that in a minute boarded an ocean liner traveled to Hawaii then settled in San Francisco There were plenty of twists and turns that had me guessing as to the identity of the double agent Now the bad at least for me It was dated It took place in the early 1970s and had a Cold War atmosphere For as intelligent as Peter was he remained clueless too long Marta Frazier a previous acuaintance turned lover did almost as good of a job putting the pieces together and that was long before Peter confessed to working undercover Their relationship had a 1950s aura And lastly the ugly There were too many secondary characters I understand Ms Simmon's reasoning to keep the reader from recognizing the killer But just about everyone that Peter and Marta had come in contact with during the past year was somehow involved It boggled my mind I love a good suspenseful story butThis book was retro If you enjoy stories taking place after the Hippie Generation died out but long before disco polyester and the oil crisis this tale of intrigue is for you Between 2 12 and 3 stars because I can't seem to make up my mind
