This is the Kavan I really thought I'd never read an allegorical novella following the life and adventures of an ex circus horse through mythologized post war England co written with her psychiatrist turned lifelong friend KT Bluth and published only once in a small edition in 1949In the aftermath of terrible war horses become most valuable as food The perceptive euine protagonist rejects political ideologies that arise amongst the other horses communism and anarchism alike as leading inevitably to the same slaughterhouse instead escaping into art by displaying circus trained dancing skills and a facility for poetry After an interlude working on a farm near an encampment of philosophers of nonsense and proponents of speaking accent as creating or superseding all other meaning the protagonist flees to the city and starts an art movement which is uickly capitalized by others While the philosophic games of the early book seem uite different from other Kavan and perhaps show of Bluth's guiding hand the passages on art bear the unmistakable stamp of Kavan's experience though nowhere else has she written so directly about her experiences as a writer or her brief period in vogue in post war avant garde circles As our horse protagonist is told to change with the times and take up painting with claws or feathers instead of the hooves which were going out of vogue Kavan seems to have felt that her writerly impulses predated the post war scene and thus could not be rendered out of date she was simply writing in the only way true to her own creative beinguite different from anything else Kavan was involved in though capturing a key era of her experience and insight this comes off as a kind of satiric fairy tale As such it's both highly personal and briskly readable in its own right though admittedly probably most interesting to the Kavan familiar And with the lack of reprints probably destined to remain a curio for the determined But uite a satisfying one considering As far as the un re printed and long lost go though try to find Kavan's Eagles' Nest or Bright Green Field both of which were composed in that out of vogue stretch of the 50s but stand with Kavan's very top tier of workA few uick notes of co author Bluth to most Kavan readers he will be familiar already both as the doctor who deemed Kavan's heroin habit a manageable safe form of self medication and kept her in modest prescriptions They met at the up turn of Kavan's bout of sanitarium stays in the 40s composed this and remained close friends until Bluth's death in the 60s The devastating sensation of which Kavan recorded in her story The Mercedes in Julia and the Bazooka
