I enjoyed Shirlee Taylor Harold C Haizlip's book In The Garden of Our Dreams Memoirs of a Marriage Yet I was disappointed that the 306 page memoir did not have about the marriage and less about jobsHarold and Shirlee's romance is a love at first sight relationship that endures to the present day I like the couple and want to know about them Shirlee did not take to heart advice given writers to write to an 8th grade level There were a few too many words used that I could not figure out their meaning by context It disrupts my reading when I have to stop to look up new to me words in the dictionaryI know most of the history Shirlee and Harold lived through; learned a lot about the Virgin Islands which was new information for meI would rate the memoir a 2 12 I liked it but it was just okay

Shirlee Harold Haizlip's telling of their life together is powerful Given where I am in my life in my marriage and in my roles in our community their memoir spoke to me in so many ways It has reaffirmed my belief that all of us have in common than we realize no matter what our race or socio economic status Yet given our similarities American whites have a great divide to cross to understand the African American existence beginning with slavery and fraught with racism and discrimination I am looking forward to reading Shirlee's Haizlip's The Sweeter the Juice
