Anthony and Linda O Malley had a dream of retiring to the Mediterranean for a life in the sun They moved to Llangollen to a smaller home in order to raise some money for their deposit and when they spotted a property for auction they decided to visit Alicante to take a look and hopefully make a bid. However, things did not materialise as they expected and when they spotted a relatively cheap property that seemed to fit their requirements they decided to take a look at it Unfortunately the decis Anthony and Linda O Malley had a dream of retiring to the Mediterranean for a life in the sun They moved to Llangollen to a smaller home in order to raise some money for their deposit and when they spotted a property for auction they decided to visit Alicante to take a look and hopefully make a bid. However, things did not materialise as they expected and when they spotted a relatively cheap property that seemed to fit their requirements they decided to take a look at it Unfortunately the decision was a fateful one for the supposed sellers were criminals who took them captive, used their bank cards to withdraw money and subsequently murdered them.Danny Collins, an investigative journalist on the Costa Blanca traces the story in detail and uses the first hand knowledge that he gained from pursuing it to give a fulsome picture of what exactly happened It appears that the Spanish police were originally not interested in the report of a missing couple but when the Welsh police force got involved they had to act But it took plenty of prodding from the Welsh police officers to get them to take the case seriously. There were many false trails before eventually evidence came to light, mainly by tracking down the use of mobile phones, to identify the supposed killers They were arrested, tried and jailed for long terms after the couple s bodies were unearthed from under the floor of a cellar where they had been held captive and tortured But the whole affair has an unsatisfactory air about it because lurking in the background and getting away with their part in it are others who could have played a significant part in the crime Collins exposes an underworld never seen by tourists and the story is a cautionary tale for all who seek an escape to the Mediterranean sun no, thank you
