I love reading translated books and this has become one of my favourites nowThe story was originally written in Bengali by Bishad Sindhu The book is about the the incident of Karbala  on 10th October AD680 ie the demise of Hassan and Hussain the grandson of prophet Mohammad Sometimes it happens that we dont visit some places and we just heard about them but with the help of this book i could relate to the incidentWe all know that Muhharam is a sad day but we never knew the real story behind it This book explains that in detail The characters are well balanced It might make you emotional but at the same time surprised by the historyI am impressed by the way all the events are put out

Name Ocean of MelancholyThe tragedy that was KarbalaOriginally written in Bengali as Bishad Sindhu by Mir Mosharraf HossainTranslated by Alo Shome Published by Niyogi BooksPages 206Storyline The original Bishad Sindhu was a retelling of the horrific events that took place in Karbala Ira on the 10th of October AD 680 Till date people all over the world mark it as a day of mourning for the grandsons of Prophet Muhammad Hassan who was poisoned and Hussain who was killed brutally in Karbala This book translated by Alo Shome explores the events in the manner Mir Mosharraf Hossain narrated them in Bishad SindhuReview ●Most of the people are aware of the gist that took place in Karbala but the manner in which this book retells the heart wrenching story is beyond words●The graphic descriptions the foreplay of human emotions desires foolishness greed suffering everything were definitely well balanced●Bishad Sindhu retells this story with a mixture of romanticism spiritualism mysticism supernaturalism instead of just stating the historical records I was impressed by the research that Alo Shome did for this book which he included as footnotes where he deemed them necessary and also sometimes omitting some subplots of Bishad Sindhu which is debatablePersonal Views I remember reading proses and poetries on Muharram in bengali as a part of school curriculum They never elaborated on the events that took place which lead to the tragedy in Karbala Hence reading a book which not just states the history but makes the readers feel the story has been a great experience for me

First of all a must read to know the history of IslamSecondly Mir Mosarraf Hossain's magnum opus is Bishad Shindhu depicting the tale of Martyrdom of Hasan and Husayn in Karbala He was one of the first Muslim writers to emerge from colonial British IndiaThis book contains much poetic language and many dramatic sessions At the time Bengali novels were rarely written and a few writers including Mosarraf Hussain were trying to establish the concept of novels in Bengali It was written in Shadhubhasha a Sanskritised form of BengaliThough I was surprised by the violence of Muslim history still a good read

An epic narration of the legend of Muharram and the original Jihad from a Shia perspective Bishad Sindhu' is one of the masterpieces of Bengali literature Written by Mir Musharraf Hussain this tale oscillates between history and myth thereby weaving a griping and un putdownable narrative Parts of the tale are confirmed by history like the death of Imam Hassan by poisoning in the hands of his wife Jayeda the slaughter of Imam Hussain in Karbala in the hands of Yazid's army of Damascus Though regarding the reason for this conflict history can only suggest religio political reasons namely the struggle for the Caliphate of Islam; the bookbased on legend romanticizes it as the struggle for the possession of a woman Jaynaab The Shia and Shunni are divided over the righteousness of the Caliphate of Islam; the Shias upholding the direct descendants of Hazrat Muhammas ie Hassan and Hussain while the Shunnis believing otherwise Hence Muharram is an ocassion of mourning for the Shias only In many Shunni texts Yajid may not be so much vilified Thus the two sects of Islam present an interesting case study of unreliable narration Mir Musharraf Hussain is perhaps the first ever Muslim writer in Bengali His text is uniue vibrant and cinematic I could detect traces of modernism and postmodernism in his writing of the kind John Fowles is revered for That is indeed surprising for an author contemporary of Bankimchandra writing in 'sadhubhasa' This brilliance of text can only be attributed to Mir himself since it is unlikely for him to have imbibed this style from anyone at an age when even the terms like modernism and postmodernism were not coined There lies the genius of this man as an author

Mir Mosharraf Hossain born in 1885 in West Bengal wrote a brilliant literary piece in Bengali called Bishad Sindhu The book narrates the cataclysmic story of Hassan and Hussein grandsons of Prophet Muhammad Ocean of Melancholy translated and deciphered by Alo Shome explores the occasions within the way Mir Mosharraf Hossain described them in Bishad SindhuThe story circles around the narrative of how Hassan was poisoned and Hussein mercilessly decapitated in the war of Karbala by Yazid who was fixated on Hassan's spouse Zainab and the royal seat of Medina The storyline with a dramatic essence assesses human enduring and the eager and materialistic nature of man describing the foundation of the massacre that took place The characters are uite adeuate in their intrigue and significance In spite of the fact that there are hoards of them not one of them appears to be strange and superfluous to the affairs that transpire Along with the characters and the historical setting the regions docketed in the book made a difference in building the tale as well Topics of Justice Power and Control have been traversed and has given a comprehension of the issues identified with itAs a whole Ocean of Melancholy was a commendable read with an appreciative message and moral lessons Though it is significantly historic it will appeal to non history readers as well
