Newly minted college graduate Holly has big plans for her future that don't involve marrying her childhood pal Teddy Holly plans to open up a cheesecake bakery in some uaint small town with friendly locals Her mother would be horrified Coming from a life of wealth and privilege Holly's life is supposed to be filled with directing servants to bake and not doing it herself Only Holly's Aunt Lizzie understands how suffocating that life is and agrees to help Holly out Before that can happen Aunt Lizzie drops dead at a party in Holly's family home Holly is certain her beloved aunt was murdered but her parents don't want the police to investigate so Holly takes it upon herself to find out the truth She searches for clues with Teddy and what she finds will change her whole life This story is really really implausible Holly is young and immature for 22 There's a lot of telling and not enough showing Why Holly doesn't like her parents' lifestyle isn't fully fleshed out We're just told she doesn't like it because her mom won't let her bake and her parents expect her to marry her childhood friend Holly went to college but what she did there and what skills she has are not mentioned In this short space I could feel her special relationship with Aunt Lizzie and was gutted when Aunt Lizzie died My heart went out to Holly Her investigation leads to some shocking surprises I found incredibly unbelievable Teddy seems like a good friend to Holly I don't think he wants to marry her any than she wants to marry him but he'll do what is expected because he's a dutiful son He's fun and funny His parents are snooty rich people like Holly's maybe worse Officer Harrison is the reason Holly suspects Officer Trinket of being a crooked cop She only knows what she knows based on her past experiences and Officer Harrison sounds like a lazy no good cop Yet perhaps all is not what it seems This story could have been told in flashbacks as Holly investigates her first official murder By itself it's too thin and impossible to really be anything except time killing fun filler

Enticing story of how Holly Hart started her business and moved to Fairview This was such a cute story While murder is not cute the way Holly tries to solve it is You will laugh and cry with this one

  3. Cynthia Varady Cynthia Varady says:

Holly has a plan to escape the rigid confines of her life her parents have planned for her She wants to open up a cheesecake shop and live peacefully in a small town But when her Aunt Lizzie is murdered Holly's plans are ruined because her aunt was funding her escapeOut of grief and love and determined to solve the mystery of her aunt's murder with the help of Muffins her dog and her childhood best friend Teddy she embarks on a trail of clues that will lead to family secrets she's not sure she ever wanted to know Especially when the killer notices and she becomes the next targetA nice little story with a few twists is what I would call an easy read and leads into the rest of the series of books which are now on my TBR list Reasonable written and the story flowed well

Murder with a Slice of Cheesecake by Laura Pauling is a preuel to the Holly Hart mystery series This is a novella length book While the mystery and sleuthing in this book were choppy and didn't really come together very well I did enjoy getting introduced to the characters and learning about Holly Hart This was a free novella for signing up for the author's newsletter I would rate this 35 stars for providing good background information and setting up an interesting cozy series that I look forward to reading

  6. Kay (Brigidsmomma) Compton Kay (Brigidsmomma) Compton says:

This is just a short mystery but provides the backstory as to how and why Holly came to be in Fairview While it may be short in length that doesn't mean it isn't long on drama or action A well told backstory that helps explain a few things that the series just glosses over I really liked it

    I enjoyed this book
