The Playboy’s Proposal is the third story in the Sorensen Family series by Ashlee Mallory It’s one of the few ‘sweet’ romance series that I read and after reading the first story last year I knew I’d be keeping an eye out for the next ones The author writes with such an engaging style and with enough sexual tension between the main characters that you really don’t miss the bedroom scenes and just enjoy the romance and family dynamics of each storyThis time around it’s Bernadette or Benny as she’s known to her family who is ready for something different She’s very happy for her two brothers who have fallen in love with wonderful ladies that she now considers friends and truth be told is a little envious As a doctor she’s worried about being taken seriously among her male colleagues and since she’s always been something of a tomboy she tends to dress very conservatively at work and not play up her femininity But she has a crush on one of the doctors and her awkward flirting skills leave something to be desired Not only that but her annoying neighbour is driving her crazy Wealthy advertising guru Henry shows his entitlement issues with late night parties usually when she’s got an early morning shift encroaching on her single parking space with his multiple vehicles and just generally making her life miserable When Henry brings his young niece into the ER with a skittles dilemma they meet on her turf and despite their acrimonious previous meetings Benny is professional Back home later on though with Benny threatening to bring their problems to a condo board meeting Henry makes a deal with her He’d noticed her obvious interest in the male doctor she works with and offers her a bargain – if she’ll drop her fight with him with the condo board in return he’ll play the nicer neighbour and he’ll help her learn the art of flirtation so that she can catch the Doc’s attention Since Benny isn’t making any progress on her own she agrees to a short time frame to take Henry’s lessons and since he has uite the playboy reputation she knows he must have some insider information she can use But as Benny transforms into a confident and sophisticated woman Henry comes to a startling conclusion – he uite likes Benny no matter what she’s wearing or how she acts And the idea of her with another man which is the point after all is uite unsettling What’s a playboy to do when the only game he knows could cost him the prize? What a fun story The enemies to lovers trope is a favourite of mine and right from the start it’s clear that Benny and Henry are feeling a lot of antagonism towards each other though it doesn’t last too long Once Benny plays her professional part in assisting Henry’s niece and Henry realizes she’s not uite the harbinger of doom to his playboy lifestyle they form a truce that holds them in good stead Henry’s makeover of Benny is truth be told uite overdo and it’s because Benny is ready for a change anyway that she accepts his advice on clothing makeup and putting one’s best foot forward Henry realizes that Benny is uite an attractive women once she’s not raging at him in her pajamas and teaching her to flirt is but the first step to realizing how much he actually enjoys her company She’s sassy and opinionated and doesn’t fawn at his handsome feet like so many of the other women he knows Plus toning down his public image while coaching Benny is good for business as his boss warns him that his contracts for family based companies could be compromised by his playboy ways The attraction between the two is genuine and leads to some steamy kisses but no bedroom scenes and a strong friendship that Henry soon realizes is not enough But he’ll have to get over his commitment issues pretty uick before he loses Benny to the handsome doctor who’s starting to take an interest in her now that her transformation has occurredLike the other books in the series we get some great family scenes and that is definitely part of the strength of this story Benny’s family is warm and friendly even to Henry when he accompanies Benny to a family dinner – though he first has to put up with a brotherly interrogation They accept Benny no matter how she acts or appears but are eually thrilled with her new look They can also sense that Henry means to her than just a friend despite what she says The angst level of this story is low and the conflict just enough to keep the plot moving and make Henry and Benny work for their happy ending Overall it’s another delightful and heartwarming story in this seriesNote a copy of this story was provided by the publisher via NetGalley for reviewThis review appears as a blog post at
