TRIGGER WARNING abduction dubcon sexual assault racismThis book was actually pretty fun in spite of some ridiculous elementsThe good Beautiful descriptions of the Moroccan landscapeThe hero's dialogue is so ridiculously over the top flowery that it becomes hilarious and even he seems to be laughing at himself at some pointsThe hero seems to be legitimately trying to be supportive of and respectful to women than his culture allows although he has some ingrained misogynist tendencies that go unexaminedThe heroine is a savvy businesswoman who's feisty and stubborn and she'll do self destructive things like try to walk across the desert until she collapses from heatstroke rather than get back in the car with her kidnapper after he casually informs her that he bought her from her ex fiance like she was a piece of property but she's never portrayed as some unreasonable shrew or a moron who should just let the man take care of herThe badThe heroine decided to uit being a successful businesswoman because she thinks that choosing to pursue a career instead of a family is what killed her parents She used all the money she was earning to send them on vacation and their plane fell out of the sky so clearly God was trying to put her back in her placeThe hero buys her like a piece of property drugs her and smuggles her out of the country because apparently it would take too much time to explain that her fiance had packed her house full of cocaine and the cops were on their wayThe villain is a bad kidnapper who kidnaps the heroine to sell as a sex slave because the hero made him look badThe uglyThe heroine makes an offhand comment about not wanting to wear funny black robes like the Muslim women in town It's a small thing but not exactly culturally sensitiveArab men I think; the hero insists that he's a Berber not an Arab but the heroine isn't really listening and it's not clear what everyone else's background is tend to be described as repulsive with features like bulbous eyes hooked noses and rubbery lipsThe hero comes off as very handsome but he has laser blue eyes which aside from not being a real eye color cannot be common among North African BerbersAfter the rescuereconciliation the heroine declares I never want to be on my own again darling A woman needs a husband and her place is by his side There was a time when I'd have argued against that but I hadn't met you then I guess this is standard for a romance novel but it would have been nice not to have to watch her go from feisty to fawning like thatOverall if you're into abduction fantasies this is pretty enjoyable The writing is very descriptive The characters are likeable and both work hard to overcome their cultural differences The heroine actually does decide to go back to work despite what her dialogue implies and in the epilogue she seems satisfied with a husband and baby and a career The sex was good too although you'd think a doctor would know better than to do it in the ocean So unsanitaryThis book wasn't perfect but it's better than most Mercury
