Vamps and shifters just go together don’t they?Ordinarily they’re begrudging allies against a common foe but here Alec and Kai are seemingly fated mates I like that mucking with traditional roles and Black not only broke the chains of interspecies but made this an interracial relationship as well In the deep South Alec and Kai are in high school when we meet them and Alec’s a bit of gluttonous vampire He's compelled and fed on one too many so he and his keepers are forced to move But he never forgets the boy who burned so bright To me he was everything I wanted To me he was beautiful I needed to run my fingers along his skin to cherish him In the heat of the blazing sun I wanted to taste his sweat I wanted him beneath me a part of me a part of my soul He didn’t frighten me He entranced me He called to me Black did an amazing job of building intrigue as to what Kai was and I loved the mother How she was so accepting no nonsense and seemed to have a sixth sense about everything She maybe overshadowed the couple though I would've liked backstory for both of the MCs and relationship development Once Alec returns 10 yrs later they went warp speed and then it was over No epilogue no nothing It was all very jarring and left me unfulfilledBut I would certainly read something else of hers I like her manner of storytelling and would love to see what she could do with a longer story A review copy was provided in exchange for an honest opinionCheck out the other reviews of this other stories for week 2 of Shifter Sunday Funday

Is it just me who loves to read the stories of the things that go bump in the night? I grew up reading Alfred Hitchcock Edgar Allen Poe and Stephen King to name a few I've always been fascinated by all things paranormal but the darker the grittier the intense has always held my attention for longer 'They Called Him Nightmare' was everything I wanted it to beAlec may seem like the town's golden boy but what they don't know is his secret to keep His secret of what he'd really like to do to so many of the residents What he wishes he could do to feed his soul Kai may be the one they're all afraid of and he may be dark as night but Alec with his sunny disposition and golden hair is hiding a true terror There's nothing Alec wants than Kai howeverPlease find my full review at Rainbow Book Reviews

Wow This is a short story that felt a lot longer than its number of pages made me think it would be The world created here is fantastic and different from other paranormal situations I have read about The main characters Alec and Kai are intriguing unusual and not at all who they seem to be at first glance The plot held me in suspense and the emotions overwhelmed me – in a good wayKai is despised feared and bullied because he has midnight black skin and looks otherworldly People fear him for no reason that I could see – he is hardworking threatens nobody and just wants to be left alone so he can live his life in peace The one encounter he has with Alec while in high school does not go well but that is because Kai isn’t ready for what Alec can offer Alec is everyone’s darling He is attractive wealthy and people are bending over backward to get into his good graces The darkness he hides is not visible to anyone and the way he thinks about humans as “snacks” is scary He is as alone as Kai and determined to find him despite the fact that he seems to have vanished after their first encounterI can’t say too much about what happens because that would spoil the entire experience for you But I can say that I was delighted when I found out about Kai’s nature I loved what happened when they met again and I as impressed with the writing If you like stories about unusual paranormal beings in interesting situations if you believe loneliness is not something anyone deserves no matter who or what the are and if you’re looking for a read that is mysterious intense and very powerful then you will probably love this short story as much as I do It impressed me and I wish it were longerNOTE This book was provided by Dreamspinner Press for the purpose of a review

Read as part of the Boy Meets Boy Review Shifter Sunday Funday for Dreamspinner 2016 Daily Dose A Walk on the Wild Side Anthology 4 HeartsThis story was intense I was not expecting that level of intensity from such a short story Kai just wants to be left alone to live his life in solitude taking care of his mother and brooding about lifeAlec sees this boy in the halls at his high school that they call Nightmare and he cannot get him out of his mind They connect on a soul deep level but Kai is determined to stay away because nothing good can come of Alec and the feelings he brings out; the want and the ‘mine’There is a level of darkness in this that screams possession It is in every page and builds to something unstoppable I felt it simmering from the very beginning and that feeling kept me engagedI was not expecting the outcome of this story but I suppose I should have picked up the clues I was a little let down by the ending but the build up was masterful Maybe it’s just that I wanted a little But I am pretty sure I say that with most short stories I read I’m greedy that way I would definitely go for something longer by this author The mastery is there and this felt like a perfect sampleRecommended for anyone who likes things a little angsty and paranormal or if you want to sample paranormal before committing to the genre A copy was provided in exchange for an honest review

ARC provided by the publisher through Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words in exchange for an impartial review From the 2016 Daily Dose package – A Walk on the Wild Side This short story is my first from this author and I was pleasantly surprised by the story It opens with high school student Alec assessing all the others in his class for who will taste the best A young vampire he has the ability to put people in thrall so they have no idea he has had sex with them and drunk their blood But when the young man nicknamed Nightmare is around Alec loses his ability to think straight He’s attracted to the boy whose real name is Kai and when he reaches out and touches him sparks literally fly Both recoil from the shock but Alec wants and Kai wanting nothing to do with Alec disappears shortly after the encounter Flash forward ten years and Alec has finally found the location where Kai has been hiding from him all this time Excited to finally set out to meet the man he feels attracted to he has no idea that Kai’s mother or at least the woman he calls mother is dying of cancer but wants nothing than to see her boy settled before she goes so is willing to help him get his man There’s much including some very good character development considering the brevity of the story and there’s a surprise in store for readers who are wondering what type of being Kai might be Let’s just say he’s the last of his kind When the two men come together this time they ignite in passion and finally fulfill their destiny I really like this story as I said at the beginning of this review It had all the ingredients of a longer story including a uniue otherworldly perspective and I’m looking forward to from this author in the future

Unfortunately the idea of this story was much better than the execution The story begins with the two main characters in high school and after a few chapters it skips forward by ten yearsConsidering the short length of this story those first few chapters of the boys’ first meeting seem rather a waste of words I think the story would have benefitted from the two men meeting as adults and for Alec to actively pursue a reluctant Kai as the blurb suggests There was no reason I could see to keep the characters apart for a decadeThe characters including Kai’s adopted mother seemed interesting but we don’t know enough to actually care about them one way or another I wasn’t wishing for them to reunite I wasn’t even sad that Kai’s mother was dyingMy favourite part of the story by far was the visual of Kai taking his shifter form you really could imaging it the way the author describedBut then it ended The characters had spoken very briefly once as teens had angry sex once as adults and that was it The story needed a whole lot added to it to get me invested as a reader Short stories are trickier to accomplish this with but it can definitely be doneThe writing itself was well done I just needed padding I guess I would be interested in checking out a full length novel by this authorReviewed for Love Bytes Reviewshttplovebytesreviewscom2016060
