3 The holidays are for family StarsJody Holford begins her new Kendrick Place series with a romance built between best friends that initially starts out as a complete ruseThis isn’t the first book I have read by this author and although the elements that I found enjoyable from my previous read from here were present in relation to characters story line and writing style I found the balance a little off with Owen and Gabby’s story in respect to the amount of page time they were given versus all the secondary characters and their what sometimes seemed overly descriptive back stories and character development He was the smartest man she knew and so bloody stupid she wanted to smack him The positives for me were certainly the likeability of them both as individuals and although totally opposite in character the author did a really great job of highlighting this as a reason they were actually really compatible Owen came over a little blunt and OCD in his behaviours particularly in the first half of the book but I liked Gabby being arty and free with her feelings and emotions she embraced those things about him and loved him anyway Owen’s family was a big plus as well this was something I have to say I was expecting as family played a big part in the previous book I read by Jody Their inclusion in More Than Friends bought out the best in Owen and gave the best Christmas to Gabby at the same time You’re the best fake girlfriend a guy could ever ask for” It was just everything else that went on in the background that I then found to be overly detracting from this couple in general I understand that the introduction of a couple of characters were needed as the future books are likely to be about them but I think a lot of the added information for them could possibly have been left for their books enabling the author to deepen the backgrounds for Owen and Gabby as well as broaden the emotional connection for them as they moved from friends to loversThis isn’t a bad book there is still a pretty decent story line going on here I just think a few elements could have been removed to give focus to the main couple But it was sweet Christmassy and offered up a few hours of escapism I am hoping that now the author has set the scene and introduced the cast in this book that future ones from the series will have emphasis on the Hh in uestion than the secondary aspects of the plotARC generously provided via Netgalley and it was a pleasure to provide the above honest review

25 stars More Than Friends is the first in Jody Holford's Kendrick Place series and as far as firsts go it held just enough enjoyment for me to see the story through The next week might possibly kill her or at least demolish her heart Best friends to lovers is a trope I'm fond of but as we all know it's one that is done an awful lot as is the fauxmance so for me the couple in uestion and their story need to bring something fresh to the table Unfortunately Owen and Gabby generally failed on that score and despite the fact that they're endearing and have a nice chemistry I found their story weighted on the predictable side steadily paced and with an element thrown in to the mix in that fizzled out like a firework dropped in a bucket of water seemingly serving no purpose other than in providing some drama to what was sadly a pretty dull storyline and possibly to set something up for a secondary character or two down the line We can’t wreck this Us What we have Owen's family were what saved this story for me; they brought the enjoyment factor that kept me going and reminded me of the family from While You Were Sleeping which is one of my favourite films so that was very much a positive And whilst the emotion came thick and fast in the last 20% and I suddenly went from being non plussed to having a tiny lump in my throat it was unfortunately that bit too late for me to rate this any higher Copy received courtesy of Entangled Publishing via NetGalley for an honest and unbiased opinion

More than friends is the second book I've read by Jody Holford and I really enjoyed this one It was funny and sweet Gabby and Owen are great characters The storyline had me giggling all the way throughGabby has always had than platonic feelings for Owen but has never told him They are great friends and live close to each other Owen isn't good with Christmas spirit He tries to avoid going home to see his family He has tried all the excuses in the book and this year he's about to be caught out Owens family are coming to him for Christmas this year and his little white lies are about to catch up with him He needs gabby's help He needs a special girl who can play the part of the serious girlfriend who he couldn't possibly leave over the holiday periodGabby doesn't have any family of her own and Owen is the closest friend she has When he asks her to be his fake girlfriend she can't help but want to test the relationship water She's always liked Owen and hopes to get over her crush If he's a bad kisser it just wouldn't work Hours of kissing later and some comical family moments maybe there is to their relationship45 stars out of 5 I really enjoyed this one and even though the story was predictable there were no cringe worthy moments More than friends is perfect to get you in the Christmas spiritARC

I don't pick up books like this very often but almost every time I do I keep telling myself I should do it often I am obsessed with romantic Hallmark movies and while I read this I kept thinking that this story is like a Hallmark movie just in a literary form While Hallmark movies might be trash for some I absolutely love them mostly because there is comfort in knowing that there will be a happy ending in the future As the title of this suggests the characters end up being than friends Rather than spending time uestioning whether falling in love will happen you can take comfort in the knowledge that it will and rather focus on enjoying the experience of finding out HOW it all happens Owen is a geeky tech guy who works from home He likes his solitude and lives his life by certain kind of order His best friend and neighbor Gabby is his total opposite in many ways but it is impossible for his to imagine his life without herWhen Owen tells his family that he wants to spend the Christmas with his girlfriend he soon finds himself faced with a problem Lying about a relationship in hopes of avoiding the hustle and bustle of family Christmas does not work out uite the way he expected His family is coming over for the holidays and he has to find a girlfriend for himself before that Or could he just continue the lie and fake a relationship with someone who knows him better than anyone else? This is where Gabby comes in She has been in love with Owen for a while now and while she knows faking a relationship with Owen will probably hurt her in the long run she cannot resist the chance to see whether she actually has chemistry with him But as Owen's family arrives the fake relationship gets deeper and suddenly starts to feel so much real than expected for both Owen and GabbyI think books like this have to be approached with a mindset that does not insist on uestioning every single decision the characters make That is often hard for me but More than Friends managed to pull me in in a way that made it possible for me just to enjoy the ride Sure I kept uestioning Owen's decision to lie in the first place and his choice to keep up with the lie And yes I found the weird robbery story line that takes place on the side a bit unnecessary and uestioned the author's decision to include it there though if this ends up being a series then it makes sense because through that story line the author was able to introduce other people who live in the building Gabby and Owen are both likable as characters and I really enjoyed their interaction together Since this book is uite short uite a bit happens in a short span of time but then fact that they have been friends for a long time makes it easier to believe that they suddenly fall in love Owen's family is also filled with interesting personalities and I definitely would not mind reading about them if there is to be continuations for this novel As I said I could totally see this one as a Hallmark Christmas movie There are actually uite many of these I need someone to pretend to be my boyfriendgirlfriend for the holidays films out there but I liked these characters so much that I think they could add a wonderful addition to Hallmark's line up If you are looking for a romantic uick book to read during the holidays definitely check out More than Friends by Jody Holford And if you are like me and love Hallmark romances you DEFINITELY should give this one a go

I love a good fake relationship with real feelings story add in some Christmas cheer and I was excited to read More than Friends Owen and Gabby have been friends for a couple years and while on the outside Gabby seems fine with being his best friend on the inside she dies a little every day that Owen doesn’t realize how she really feels Still she decides to play along with his ruse when he asks her to pretend to be his girlfriend while his family visits for the holidaysThe relationship between Owen and Gabby was sweet and I really enjoyed reading about them and their developing feelingsHowever other parts of the story fell a little short for me at times there was too much other “stuff” going on and that would have been ok if the background stories were fully developed and explained But I don’t think that they were – we never got any answers on the elusive Wyatt and what about the creepy Jake what was his deal?Maybe they will feature in future books but I couldn’t help that feel that these unexplained plot points and characters left this book with an unfinished feeling Tamara 3 Stars
