This is my most favourite children's book of all time And that's saying something as Roald Dahl's 'Matilda' is second only to this 'The Long Walk' is an incredibly beautiful story set during the depression in Victoria Australia my home town When their mother leaves with Tuberculous to go to a rest home Isa and her siblings travel with just the clothes on their backs and a pram to push to seek their father whom they believe to be working on the Great Ocean Road Their journey is one of immense strength growth and courage Kerry Greenwood proves to have an exceptional skill to provide a vivid story to any reader My taste for historical fiction was definitely spurred by this amazing story that I will never stop loving

I enjoy books written for 'children' and occasionally 'young adults' The writing on this book however lacked any descriptive pieces whatsoever the sentences being very very short and simplistic even for a child reader in my view

A beautiful story about four children's journey to find their father after their mother was diagnosed with TB Set in Victoria Australia during the Great Depression the story tells of thirteen year old Isa's courages decision to take her siblings on the journey so they could avoid been separated by been sent to different orphanages by the welfare department The childrens encounter with various people who either helped them or created problems for them and Isa's resourcefulness makes this an inspirational story for older children to read

  9. Ngaire Ngaire says:

An epic uest that uses archetypes of the Hero's Journey Joseph Campbell that are often used in greek legends On a simpler scale this is a lovely story about a family persevering through the great depression in Australia When Isa's mother falls ill and is taking into hospice care her and her younger siblings are in danger of being split up into foster care Instead they set out from melbourne on a uest to find their father working somewhere on the Great Ocean Road This is a beautifully written historical fiction that gives multiple viewpoints on a dark time in Australia's history
