Ben is a rancher in New Mexico at the beginning of the previous century He just sold the oil rights on his ranch for a lot of money Now that he has a choice he decided to leave his old life his old lifestyle behind so he traveled to Hollywood to see a man that he couldn't forget But things turned out uite differently than he expectedI loved to read about the beginning of the movie industry in Hollywood and how crazy those pioneer filmmakers were It was clearly a time when Westerns were the flavour of the week and Ben with his mad skills as a rancher and cattle handler came in handy during a scene or two The book is also written with sort of old fashioned English; the characters used slang that I had no idea what it meant but it felt in tune with the time of the bookI really enjoyed the book it was like a slice of life of a bygone era

I loved this book The main character Ben just jumped out at me as being someone real and someone I wanted to know Parhelion does a wonderful job of character development but not at the expense of the story it moves right along As I was getting down to the last few pages I started to feel like I wasn't ready to give this up that I wanted to know I wanted to see what happened to Ben and Johnny But it ended and that is my only complaint The ending felt hurried and I felt like the emergency hatch was opened and I was jettisoned out of the story while there was a lot of story left to be told I know that the author has the right to control the story to his liking and to choose his ending and I would never assume that I know better than he so I'll just leave it at; I loved the book but I wanted Lee
