Well I still haven't been able to find the Jessie Fothergill book that matches up to her masterpiece The First Violin but this one had its good points I wasn't terribly drawn in for at least the first uarter of the book but I grew to enjoy it after that and actually was interested in a couple of the characters namely Rudulf Danesdale Delphine and Bernard Aglionby The central conflict of this novel is a little hard to understand for a modern reader who may not deal much with the concept of family honorThe plot is as follows A young working class man named Bernard unexpectedly meets his grandfather whom he had been estranged from for his whole life The grandfather offers help and wants to make Bernard his heir but Bernard refuses to make peace The grandfather along with one of his nieces goes home A few days later he dies but not before making a will in favor of Bernard who is now the owner of all the property and money Meanwhile there is a family of 3 nieces and their mother who had lived their whole lives expecting to inherit their uncle's money Their lives have been difficult and poor but they always had that hope ahead Now without a penny of inheritance they get to feeling rather bitter Bernard wishes to share the money with them and is as unselfish and generous as can be But then Judith the oldest girl discovers something about her mother that makes her and her sisters decide to refuse all claim to the inheritance and separate themselves from Bernard much to his chagrin They swear never to tell the secret about their mother so Bernard who had been falling in love with Judith and Rudulf Danesdale who is in love with the second oldest girl are left frustrated by the girls' sudden resolve to make their own way in the world and virtually efface themselves from all good company
