    Lane's book another entry in the center right Hoover Institution's Politics Economics and Society series does a fine job of summarizing problems with the case for the death penalty as well as the case against it The author's solution which is to reserve the death penalty for truly heinous cases but to execute it swiftly after its imposition has caused me to uestion my commitment to the abolition of capital punishment Nevertheless the difficulty posed by overlapping jurisdictions in America's federal system a fact the author himself acknowledges makes it unlikely that a reform of this sort could occur The real fear then is a continuing movement toward an international ie European standard which leaves open the possibility of parole in all cases even egregious ones such as genocide

    Good short balanced book on death penalty The last book I read about the death penalty was anti so I wanted to read one that was pro The information about the death penalty's actual racial impact was interesting
