The first third is an excellent history of Puritan preaching with an eye specifically toward the issue of emotion The second third is a sample of four sermons with the author's uestions for stimulating analysis The third third is a rhetorical analysis of each of the sample sermons The second and third portions are nice pieces for high school and college undergraduates to gain exposure to the task of rhetorical criticism from a rhetorical history theoretical perspective The first third of the book is what shines the most I think Dr White doesn't get the Puritan exactly right but he does better than most and has a good sense of how to do history with respect to those about whom one is writing and with a careful ualification of one's own claims as an historian
